Rising cost of Groceries 2008/03/26 11:30 Karma: 2
With groceries seeming to increase every week, how are you managing to stay within your budget? Are you now sacrificing things? I know of one lady who has stopped buying Deli items all together! What are you doing to cope?

We held a "live" forum a few days ago and here is a quick outline of some of things people have been doing...

* reduced weekly shop to a monthly shop - saving over $400 a month!
* buying home brand
* stocking up on things that are on special
* freezing bread and only using a slice at a time
* buying in bulk at warehouse with extended family
* buying F&V in bulk with extended family

I made a shopping list on printed on A5 card. It stays on the fridge so items get marked off, or written on in the spare spaces. Then on shopping day I can only buy what is on the list. It also means that before I go, I can check the catalogues to see who has the best deal. It is also good to shop in a centre that has the competing supermarkets so I'm not driving from one to another. Like Grand Plaza has ALDI, Coles and Woolies. It might take a little longer to shop, but the savings add up.

Here is a copy of the shopping list if anyone is interested. It fit two per A4 page.

My partner and i only ever buy meat when it is on special. It can be either a marked down special or a weekly special - as long as the saving is over about 20%.

When we get home the meat goes straight into the freezer. If it is in a bulk pack, we divide it up into smaller portions.

If there is no meat in the freezer, then we eat meals without meat, although we've lived in our own home now for just over 9 months and haven't yet had this happen.

We also aim to eat AT LEAST 1 meal a week that includes no meat, and 2 meals a week where we halve the meat portion.

The best time to go shopping for marked down meat is about 1 hour before closing time.

This is such a great idea! Buying in bulk and then re-packaging is very cost effective. I wonder how many other "normal" things we do, adds up and saves us money!

Community In Focus

Ipswich, Queensland

A great big thank you to the Ipswich City Council for having me out in April to speak with the community about money management.  Your Mayor and council are to be congratulated for their wonderful intiatives in your community.  I was delighted to be asked to present to you all, it was wonderful to meet so many of you!

Congratulations also to those who "stepped up" and attended the Back to Basics workshop as part of the Money Master Class series.

The GFC, rising interest rates and general cost of living, combined with the floods in January have put some you in difficult circumstances.  I trust that you will use the information from the seminars to help you get back on track.

Remember, it's all about getting Back to Basics!
