Now is a great time to talk to family and friends about what is expected for gift giving. Take hold of the situation, most people are too embarrassed to talk about it. Perhaps all by one present for one member of the family (put names in a hat), agree on a theme like books or DVD's. Kids especially really just like being around other kids and their family - this is what is most important to them!

The way I get around presents is .... we all buy, make or recycle each other a pressie that has a monetory limit of $1. The kids still get their Santa pressie but they seem to enjoy the 'limit' pressies better and look forward to after lunch so they can open them all. Ive been known to split a pair of $2 thongs into 2 to give to someone from 2 others. Ive made building blocks from sanded down offcuts and made up a picnic set for one from items I got at an op shop. With a $1 limit you really have to be creative but thats all part of the fun.

What a fantastic idea! It also brings everyone back down to earth about the true meaning of Christmas as well... it's nice to receive and give gifts, but it's really, really great being with the people you love!

If you buy a cheap plastic bucket each shopping day and fill it with your specials (or half fill it) you not only end up with plenty of christmas food but plenty of buckets for washing, kids to play with, portable herb/vegie gardens, toy containers, etc. My kids have water fights and since we are in the drought affected area, it saves water and they can cool off.

A great big thank you to the Ipswich City Council for having me out in April to speak with the community about money management. Your Mayor and council are to be congratulated for their wonderful intiatives in your community. I was delighted to be asked to present to you all, it was wonderful to meet so many of you!
Congratulations also to those who "stepped up" and attended the Back to Basics workshop as part of the Money Master Class series.
The GFC, rising interest rates and general cost of living, combined with the floods in January have put some you in difficult circumstances. I trust that you will use the information from the seminars to help you get back on track.
